But let's begin with the basics. Never mind wireless routers; what is a router in the first place?
It's simply an electronic device that directs, or routes, information through a computer network in the manner of a traffic cop and mailman combined. A router determines where the information should go and how it should get there. One of the most common applications is to provide internet access for multiple connected PCs.
Unfortunately, in common with other wireless technologies, a wireless router can suffer from interference, causing performance to lag. The top data speeds are hypothetical best-case figures, with real-world usage often significantly less inspiring. And security remains an issue, though advances have been made such that for most people current encryption schemes probably more than adequate. But on the other hand, simply having a router increases your security in itself: acting as a gatekeeper, the router intercedes between, say, your computer and the internet, adding an extra layer of insulation, so to speak.
